The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that the number of employment opportunities for psychologists will grow by 12 percent over the next eight years, with a significant increase in the demand for school counselors.
The bureau reports that Americans are growing more aware of how a child's mental health can affect their academic performance. Problems such as bullying, substance abuse and learning disorders are contributing factors to high drop-out rates. Career opportunities for organizational psychologists are also expected to rise as employers aim to boost worker productivity.
A Kentucky-based college recently added a master's degree program in psychology and a chemical dependency counselor certificate, both of which are offered online. The school's dean of enrollment said that web-based courses have become increasingly more popular among working professionals. The Sloan Consortium reports that online enrollments have grown faster than traditional higher education enrollments over the last six years.
Students are required to complete 36 hours of coursework to earn the new master's degree in psychology. Many individuals who enroll in a graduate program in this field have long-term goals to attain a doctorate degree. Job prospects for mental health professionals are typically better for candidates who hold a PhD, according to the BLS.
The certificate program, which aims to provide students with the skills that they need to assist chemically dependent patients, consists of 21 hours of online classes. Individuals who have expertise in addictive behavior may be suited for careers at drug rehabilitation centers or detox facilities.
A school in Chicago is tackling a need for psychologists on a global level. In an effort to train professionals that can foster diplomacy and promote cooperation between nations, a Chicago-based school has added a campus-based international psychology PhD program. The degree was introduced last year in an online format, but the school will now offer in-class courses beginning in January 2011.
The PhD is a 60-credit, post-master's program that will be held on weekends and evenings. Students will be required to participate in two field experiences at international sites. The BLS reports that a doctoral degree is usually required for psychologists who wish to practice independently, while some PhD carriers teach, conduct research or work in administrative roles.
According to the bureau, the American Board of Professional Psychology awards specialty certification to professionals in this field who meet a specific criteria, which includes having a doctorate degree in psychology.
